Indian Army (IA) is the 3rd largest standing army in the world. Indian Army has shown its excellence in various wars and peacekeeping missions. It is one of the few highly sophisticated and powerful Armies of the world. Here you can get an insight of Rank Structure of Indian Army. Initially, when a candidate is inducted in Indian Army he will undergo rigorous training, thereafter the candidate is inducted as a commissioned officer and awarded rank of Lieutenant. Thereafter on promotion the rank increases with that also increases the responsibility which the officer has to shoulder. The Head of Indian Army is known as General.
While the Field Marshal is a five-star honorary/wartime rank. Till date, only two officers Shri K M Cariappa and Shri Sam Manekshaw, have been awarded this rank.
